Where it all began...

Feeling utter defeat I pulled into my hotel in Canmore wet, cold, and terrified of the future.

I checked into the hotel, brought all of my gear up from the motorcycle, and burst into tears. How, on earth, was I supposed to lead a workshop on limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome the life of dreams when I felt like an absolute utter failure?

But when one door closes, others open...

Our Merrell Canada sponsored Hike + Workshop in Canmore Alberta was the official launch of Summit Within!

It wasn't without difficulty. Riding in from Victoria, Kieren drove 4 days to Canmore with Asia by her side to host her favourite workshop for the first time under Summit Within.

With contracts falling through, big future changes and many closed doors Kieren quickly shifted from staring at the closed doors to seeing the ones that were opening for her.

What is Nature Therapy? And How Can It Help?

April 18, 20245 min read

“When we slow down, with nothing preoccupying our minds, we encounter ourselves in a different way than we are used to.”

- Ben Page + M. Amos Clifford

Discovering Wellness Through Guided Nature Therapy Walks

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to become disconnected from the natural rhythms that sustain us. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, there exists a profound opportunity for healing and rejuvenation: Nature Therapy, or Forest Bathing, is a practice originating from Japan, offers a structured approach to immersing oneself in nature for improved mental health and well-being.

Nature Therapy

At its core, Nature Therapy invites us to engage with nature in a deeply immersive and respectful manner. It's not simply about hiking, running, or biking through the woods; it's a mindful and intentional way of being in nature. Research has shown that this deliberate immersion can have remarkable effects on both our mental and physical health. From reducing cortisol levels and boosting the immune system to balancing blood pressure and resetting the nervous system, the benefits are profound and far-reaching.

But Nature Therapy isn't just about the physiological effects of nature; it's about reconnecting with ourselves and the world around us. By slowing down and allowing ourselves to be fully present in nature, we open ourselves to a deeper understanding of who we are and our place in the universe. It's a practice that can mend our relationships with ourselves, with time, with our communities, and with the More-Than-Human-World.

Individuals who embark on guided nature therapy walks not only experience the immediate benefits of relaxation and stress reduction but also gain insights into their own well-being and personal growth. With nothing to distract the mind, these walks offer a rare opportunity for self-reflection and introspection. It's a chance to step away from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with our inner selves.

But the benefits of guided nature therapy walks extend beyond the individual. For organizations seeking to foster a healthier and more productive work culture, group walks offer a unique opportunity for team building and collaboration. By immersing teams in the restorative environment of nature, these walks provide a space for colleagues to connect on a deeper level, strengthen interpersonal relationships, and enhance communication skills. Moreover, they can serve as a powerful tool for addressing burnout and promoting employee well-being, ultimately leading to greater resilience and productivity in the workplace.

With that said, here are 8 reasons why a Nature Therapy walk can amplify a life well lived.

1. Boost in Energy and Restoration of Focus:

Nature has a rejuvenating effect on both body and mind. A single session of forest bathing can increase energy levels and restore focus and attention span. As you immerse yourself in the natural world, you feel invigorated by the fresh air, the gentle rustle of leaves, and the vibrant colors of the forest, leaving you feeling revitalized and ready to tackle challenges with renewed clarity and vigor.

2. Decrease in Anxiety, Anger, and Depression:

Nature has a remarkable ability to soothe the mind and soothe turbulent emotions. Forest bathing has been found to significantly reduce feelings of anxiety, anger, and depression, offering a respite from the pressures of daily life. Amidst the serene beauty of the forest, worries melt away, leaving behind a profound sense of calm and inner peace.

3. Deep Relaxation and Sense of Ease:

The tranquility of the forest offers a sanctuary from the stresses of modern life. Forest bathing induces a state of deep relaxation, allowing you to let go of tension and experience a profound sense of ease. Surrounded by the soothing sounds and sights of nature, you can let go of worries and responsibilities, finding solace in the simplicity of the present moment.

4. Enhanced Critical Thinking and Decision Making:

Nature has a way of sharpening the mind and enhancing cognitive abilities. Forest bathing has been shown to increase critical thinking and decision-making skills, providing a fertile ground for fresh insights and innovative solutions. As you navigate the winding paths of the forest, your mind becomes clearer, allowing you to approach challenges with greater clarity and confidence.

5. Strengthening of the Immune System:

Spending time in nature has been linked to a stronger immune system, and forest bathing is no exception. A single session can boost Natural Killer cell activity, the body's frontline defense against illness and disease. By immersing yourself in the healing embrace of the forest, you fortify your body's natural defenses, enhancing resilience and vitality.

6. Cultivation of Creativity and Intuition:

Nature is a wellspring of inspiration and creativity. Forest bathing nurtures creativity and intuition, stimulating the imagination and fostering a sense of connection to the world around us. As you wander through the dappled sunlight and shaded glens of the forest, you tap into the creative energies of the natural world, unlocking new ideas and insights.

7. Reduction of Stress, Blood Pressure, and Heart Rate:

In just one session of forest bathing, the immersive experience of nature has been shown to rapidly reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and decrease heart rate. As you soak in the tranquil surroundings of the forest, the calming effect of nature envelops you, easing tension and promoting a sense of deep relaxation.

8. Elevation of Feelings of Awe, Wonder, and Gratitude:

The majesty of nature has a way of inspiring awe and wonder in the human heart. Forest bathing cultivates feelings of awe, wonder, and gratitude, deepening our appreciation for the beauty and abundance of the natural world. Surrounded by towering trees, sparkling streams, and fragrant wildflowers, you are filled with a sense of reverence and gratitude for the magnificence of life.

In essence, guided nature therapy walks offer a pathway to wellness for both individuals and organizations alike. By prioritizing our connection to nature, we not only improve our own health and happiness but also contribute to a more sustainable and harmonious world.
